I have officially given up on the front lawn. The weeds win. Eastern exposure + no shade whatsoever = it would be very environmentally irresponsible to try to keep a lawn alive there, so I'm just going to admit defeat.
Part of my willingness to admit defeat is that I think, without too much effort, we should be able to develop and keep a somewhat decent lawn in the back yard. For a while there I was afraid the moss was going to win, but I think that was just because the grass hadn't been given a proper chance earlier. It's not there yet, but it's moving in the right direction.
So, the current grand plan/priority list for the Garden of Swank is:
- Get all the weeds under control. Front yard is basically there (if you ignore the lawn). Back yard has had a surprising amount of progress made on it this year. I hope to be able to complete this job this year.
- Get all of the plants pruned and in relatively good shape. Things aren't to bad here, and will continue to get better.
- Start a garden. There is already space set aside in the back yard for this. I'm ignoring that space right now. My hope is to be able to begin this project next year - family willing.
- Start to replace the lawn in the front yard with non-lawn stuff. This is probably at least a couple of years away, as I care about the garden more, and I have to figure out what the non-lawn stuff is going to be. But it's fun to start pondering it.

Your front yard sounds perfect for a veg garden. I envy you the full sun. We have 2 acres, but very little space that qualifies as full sun, and veggies just cannot thrive without it. Or you could do a huge herb garden!
