The fantasy baseball draft was today. My draft strategy was: Draft the hell out of pitchers, because usually you wait and there are only crappy guys left.
My secondary draft strategy appears to have been: If his name is Cordero or Cabrera you want him on your team.
So, without further ado, here is the 2007 House of Swank:
Catchers:
Jason Kendall (Oak)
Gerald Laird (Tex)
Middle Infielders:
Jimmy Rollins (Phi)
Michael Young (Tex)
Edgar Renteria (Atl)
- yes, I drafted a Brave, so look outside for those pigs flying right about now. The thing is, when it came time for me to pickup my backup middle infielder, Renteria was predicted to score about 50 points higher than the next highest middle infielder on my list. That's like 10-15% higher than the next closest guy. So, I HAD to pick him. And, with Rollins and Young as my go-to guys, he likely won't get a TON of play, but it did hurt to have to make that decision.
Corder Infielders:
Miguel Cabrera (Fla)
Paul Konerko (ChW)
Todd Helton (Col)
Outfielders:
Juan Pierre (LA)
Bobby Abreu (NYY)
Raul Ibanez (Sea)
Michael Cuddyer (Min)
- I got my favorite Mariner, and I didn't even have to try for him hard. When it came to that round my best options were Johnny Damon, some Brave, or Raul. Damon was a bit higher than the other guys, but I didn't want to end up with a Yankee exclusive outfield, and Rauuuuuuuuuuuul was within a couple of points of the Brave. I just love that the song he comes to the plate with is "Werewolves of London."
Utility guy:
Mark DeRosa (ChC)
- This is the only guy in the major leagues that is currently eligible at corner, middle and outfield in our league. His numbers aren't that hot, but I like having a utility guy that can fill in anywhere needed in case a certain spot gets plagued by injuries or crappiness later in the year.
Starting Pitchers:
Roy Halladay (Tor)
Carlos Zambrano (ChC)
Jeremy Bonderman (Det)
Dontrelle Willis (Fla)
Andy Pettite (NYY)
Daniel Cabrera (Bal)
Boof Bonser (Min)
Vicente Padilla (Tex)
Several exciting notes about my starting pitchers:
- I'll get to see Carlos Zambrano pitch a week from today. Assuming that I don't get killed before the game for wearing the St. Louis Cardinals hat I'm making Sweetie buy me for my birthday.
- I got Dontrelle Willis, who pitched for Boise the year I worked for the Tri-City Dust Devils. Hopefully he won't resent the fact that I professionally heckled him. Boise had a "Team Mom" that no one could stand, including the Boise team, but that always inspired us to give it to Boise a little harder.
- I've got a guy named Boof Bonser on my team. That was another round where he was a spot or two below my "first" choice, but the top spot was a Brave, all the options were pretty darn close to each other, and how can you resist a guy named Boof?
Relief Pitchers:
Tom Gordon (Phi)
Francisco Cordero (Mil)
Chad Cordero (Was)
Ricky Nolasco (Fla)
- You blink in our league and all that are left are crappy closers, or guys who close by committee. I'm hoping Gordon is as good as some of his numbers suggested last year, and Nolasco turns into a phenom that I can hold onto for a while.
Four of my five starting pitchers that are active this week have two starts, so I'm hoping that bodes well for my chances for at least ONE weekly win this year. Stay tuned, I'm sure I'll keep you posted.
