Baseball is just around the corner. Which means we're just a few weeks away from the fantasy baseball draft for the year. Historically I haven't been to hot at the fantasy baseball, but hopefully things will change this year. Here's the current team, and I get to keep like 7 guys, some of which have to be pitchers and some of which have to be batters:
Catchers:
Ivan Rodriguez (Tigers)
AJ Pierzynski (White Sox)
- catchers tend to be the least valuable of the batters, so I'll probably let both guys go, although I was happy with Ivan last year, so if I got him back I wouldn't be sad.
Corner Infielders (1st and 3rd base):
Miguel Cabrera (Marlins)
Lance Berkman (Astros)
Troy Glaus (Toronto)
Chipper Jones (Braves)
- I'm 99% confident I'll be getting Miggy with it again this year, and am pleased I picked him up when I did, as he's been a keeper ever since and one of the few bright spots of the team.
Middle Infielders (2nd base and shortstop):
Jimmy Rollins (Phillies)
Michael Young (Rangers)
Julio Lugo (Red Sox)
Aaron Hill (Blue Jays)
- Michael Young is a super stud. Jimmy Rollins puts up pretty consistent numbers, and has been on my team every season I've been in the league, although last year was the only year he ranked keeper status, and historically I re-pick him up in the draft and Allison makes a joke about his brother Henry Rollins.
Outfielders:
Nick Swisher (A's)
Adam Dunn (Reds)
Juan Pierre (Dodgers)
- I'm torn, because Juan Pierre is not a stellar player, but he occasionally puts up good numbers, especially that half a season I didn't have him on my team. And I used to watch him in the minor leagues. But there's probably someone better out there, so I'll likely be going into the draft with a full infield and in desperate need of some good outfielders.
Starting Pitchers:
Taylor Buchholz (Rockies)
Jose Contreras (White Sox)
Jason Marquis (Cubs)
Chien-Ming Wang (Yankees)
Carlos Zambrano (Cubs)
Bartolo Colon (Angels)
Roy Halladay (Blue Jays)
Scott Kazmir (Devil Rays)
Mark Prior (Cubs)
- How the heck did I end up with the entire Cubs pitching staff? That will not continue into the season. I forgot I had Chien-Ming Wang. I think I like him, but I'll have to confirm that. And I fear that Roy Halladay, the only player who has been a member of the House of Swank since I first drafted him (meaning he's been one of my keepers every darn year) may be starting to hit the downside of his career arc, but I'll likely still hold onto him. Because, really, what are my other options?
Relief Pitchers:
Ambiorix Burgos (Mets)
Brian Fuentes (Rockies)
Tom Gordon (Phillies)
- I blame Byung-Huyn Kim. He was one of my relievers my first season, and I think I had the strongest relief pitching by a long shot that season. Then the Red Sox decided he should be a started, and I dropped him like a hot brick. And have yet to pick up a decent reliever since that day. Perhaps I'll use my first few rounds of the draft to actually get me some closers this year. Perhaps that's all my team has been missing.
