I know what I'm doing for the Stitch 'n' Pitch contest I mentioned earlier. It's going to be embroidery, rather than knitting. I think I am qualified to enter in the "beginner" category, as the last embroidery I did was a pre-printed cross stitch that I completed approximately a quarter of a century ago. It proclaims "My Dad Is My Best Friend," and still hangs in his office.
It's going to be a page out of a scorebook, as that sort of incorporates all of the important baseball themes into one document in my opinion. I THINK it will be the home team's performance from Sweetie's and my rehearsal dinner in 2005, as that is something I could see framing and hanging on my wall someday. But I reserve my final decision until Sweetie digs out that scorebook for me. Sometimes things can get really complex - like when the runner doesn't notice the umpire called him SAFE at second, so starts heading back to his team's dugout, which happens to be just past third base, so the team on the field picks him off. If the game has too much crazy stuff like that happening, I'll either do the visiting team's page from that day, or another meaningful game - likely the first game we attended.
One page of a scorebook isn't really meaningful on it's own, so I'll likely do both pages at some point. but, to do them both in a month and a half when I'm totally winging it is a bit too ambitious in my eyes.
It will actually be a two-step process. First, I'll do the scorebook template in a pale green, then I'll fill in the actual game information in navy blue.
I still need to decide how MUCH information to include. I WON'T be doing all the stats that can be posted in a scorebook. I'm tempted to just do the batters in each inning, but I know there were some pitching changes, so I'll probably include some basic pitching information at the bottom. I just really want to make sure the boxes are large enough to record all the necessary information.
I also need to decide what I want to include in the individual boxes that represent a player at bat during each inning. Balls and strikes won't be recorded, as that information doesn't exist in our records. Some scorebooks have columns on the side, where you can circle how the player originally reached base, but I'm just going to record it on the diamond. Simplicity of design is key. the two big questions are, do I have some sort of "diamond" in the template, or do I leave it blank and just fill in as necessary? You see scorebooks in both formats. I'm leaning towards no diamond, for cleanness of design. The second question is if I include out #1, 2, 3 in the appropriate boxes. I think I'd like to include it, but again it comes down to cleanness of design. I think I can get started with the design with these questions unanswered, and decide on the fly.
I'm really looking forward to this project, but I'm hoping it comes out as nice as I'm imagining it.
Stay tuned, I'm sure more details will come.
