When Sweetie and I win the Mega Millions in the lottery we are going to buy the Eugene Emeralds. I am going to hire my former boss from my baseball days to be the general manager, and we are going to create a formalized internship program to train all the future sports marketers attending the University of Oregon.
We picked the Em's because we want to own a short-season team, since that means more time for travel during baseball season. Also, it must be in the Northwest League, because we wouldn't want to live anywhere else that has short-season leagues. We've picked Eugene because it is a city we could live in with a team and stadium that has potential, but is not fully living up to its potential. Yes, we have thought it through this far. And I'm not too worried about the owners deciding they don't want to sell, because we'll have mega millions of dollars, so we can just offer as much as necessary to make the team our own.
Which gets me to the point of this new blogging fodder. As I go to baseball games I will frequently see something, or brainstorm something, that would be the perfect thing to do when I am in charge of my own minor league baseball team. But I fear that I am going to forget all of these ideas, so I'm going to blog them, so I've got them to pull from later.
What will probably happen in real life is that Sweetie and I will continue to live our regular existence without the mega-millions, and some intern at some other minor league baseball team will stumble across these ideas and implement them for their own team. But at least this will allow me to continue with my dream world where I own a baseball team.
And, for the record, I'm not going to work back in minor league baseball unless I am the owner of a team, which will not happen unless I am independently wealthy. Because otherwise the lifestyle and pay is not worth it to me. If the Mariners were to call me up tomorrow and offer me a very well paying job I'd probably consider it, but I don't expect that to be happening, so I'm not holding my breath.
Did I ever tell you that my husband was recruited by the Cubs out of highschool. He ended up taking a football scholarship instead, but he has a deep history in baseball. We were just talking about owning a baseball team someday! funny how conversations can echo each other. :)
